report for Silvaplana Swiss Open 2015

The Silvaplana Swiss Open 2015 took place on August 18-21. From the 25 registered sailors, 22 found their way to the wonderful Engadina landscape in the heart of the swiss mountains.

Everything was ready to enjoy a perfect championship: the team of the St. Moritz Segel-Club had done their perfect preparation, the jury was ready to check our buoys passages, and when we arrived there on Tuesday, the Malojawind was blowing as it always does when the sun is shining.

Unfortunately, the weather changed to see a wet front passing over the Alps and blocking the thermic wind to establish. We ended up doing no single race in 3 days, which is something very rare in this location. Still, all 22 participants had a very nice time up there, with the highlight being a trip to the Furtschellas cable car for a nice dinner. We could as well benefit from the presence of Vincent Hagin, president of Swiss Sailing, who made us the surprise to participate to our dinner.

We ended up the regatta by a price draw, with very nice local food packages and sailing gear by our class sponsor Forward Sailing. Thanks to Greg for the very nice polos, your presence and your help to promote the class !

Price draw by Stephan Züger

Thanks as well to the jury team for his explanations on the buoys passing rules, and of course to Stephan Züger and the organising team for their excellent job !

Some boat statistics to feed the speculations 2 weeks before the Worlds:

  • 12 Scheurer G7 (flying)
  • 3 DNA with Z boards (flying)
  • 2 Scheurer G6 with C boards
  • 2 Scheurer G5
  • 1 Scheurer G4 woody
  • 1 Marstrom
  • 1 DNA with C boards

So it seems flying boats have taken over Switzerland, with 15 flying boats (14 SUI) over 22 total.
